The debate over legalizing recreational marijuana is coming to Minnesota. The Minnesota House of Representatives indicated they may take up the issue of marijuana this year, focusing on: broadening the medical marijuana program, reforming criminal justice to lessen penalties for nonviolent drug offenders, and “highly regulated” legalization of recreational use marijuana, in that order of priority. There is also potential for this issue to be placed onto a ballot in future elections. As the law remains today, it is still illegal to sell or possess marijuana in Minnesota without medicinal licenses, which are tightly controlled by the state. Other states with legalized recreational marijuana have taken steps towards automatic expungement of previous marijuana possession convictions, but that is not currently part of the debate in Minnesota.
