As Presidents’ Day approaches, it’s not only a time celebrate the leaders who have shaped our nation, but also a time to reflect on our former Presidents and the legal challenges they faced. Throughout history, presidents have navigated complex legal landscapes, often finding themselves at the center of controversies and facing scrutiny from the public, Congress, and even the courts.
Most recently, former president, Donald Trump, received four indictments in 2023, making history as the first and only former president to ever be indicted. Other past presidents faced their own political scandals, with some coming close to facing criminal charges. For example, Bill Clinton lied under oath while being deposed for a civil lawsuit. While President Clinton never faced any criminal charges, he was impeached for perjury. Another example is Richard Nixon, who became the centerpiece in the infamous Watergate Scandal during his presidency. The scandal involved burglaries, illegal wiretaps, and other crimes committed for the advancement of President Nixon’s election campaign. Before President Nixon could be impeached, he resigned and was granted a blanket pardon by his successor, President Gerald Ford, never to face criminal charges.
The first and only sitting president to ever be arrested was Ulysses Grant. In 1872, President Grant was pulled over by Officer West for speeding in a horse-drawn carriage. President Grant apologized, pledging to follow the regulated speed, and Officer West let him off with a warning. President Grant’s promise did not last long. The very next day, he was caught speeding again by none other than Officer West. Officer West arrested President Grant, who then commended Officer West for his fearless commitment to his duty.
