Every year the mpls downtown council sponsors the Minneapolis Aquatennial to celebrate the twin cities’ beautiful lakes, rivers and streams. Originally established in 1940, to overshadow the Teamsters Picnic, an annual event commemorating the numerous union victories for laborers following the tragic events of “Bloody Friday” in 1934, it has since evolved into the one of the premier summer events in the Midwest. This year the Minneapolis Aquatennial celebration officially kicks off on Wednesday July 19 at 7:30 PM, with the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade that will feature legendary Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations Cheryl Reeve, General Manager Clare Duwelius, and President of Business Operations Carley Knox of the Minnesota Lynx as the Grand Marshalls to celebrate the Lynx 25th Season. Metro Transit will also be offering free ride passes to downtown on Wednesday that are valid from 4 PM until midnight. Get yours here.
There will be musicians and activities throughout each day of the festival including water ski shows, live music, food and drinks, games and activities at the Kids Zone and many more free events. The celebration closes on Saturday July 22 at 10: PM with Target Fireworks, considered to be one of the top five annual fireworks displays in the nation! Remember however that any fireworks require a permit, so we suggest that you just enjoy the free show. Read more about Minnesota fireworks laws here here.
If you are a Minnesota sports fan, the Minnesota Lynx and the Minnesota Twins will both have home games during the festivities.
