Deer Hunting Season with a Firearm Opens November 9th this year. Many people in Minnesota are unaware they are subject to a prohibition on possessing firearms. If you have ever been convicted or even adjudicated delinquent as a juvenile of any felony offense listed below, you may be subject to a lifetime prohibition on possessing firearms. THIS IS EVEN THOUGH YOU MAY HAVE PAPERWORK STATING YOUR RIGHTS WERE RESTORED WHEN YOU WERE DISCHARGED FROM PROBATION! In 2003, the laws in Minnesota changed from a 10-year prohibition for those convicted of some felonies to a lifetime prohibition if the person was discharged from probation or parole after August 1, 1993. So, from 1993 – 2003, people being discharged from probation were told they needed to wait 10 years and then their gun rights would be restored. NO LONGER TRUE! The State of Minnesota never notified thousands of Minnesotans the law changed and the prohibition is now for life. You could also be subject to a lifetime prohibition on possessing firearms even if your conviction was reduced to a misdemeanor.
