Starting September 6, 2023 the Anoka Social District will officially begin its trial period. Social District hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day through October 7, 2023. The trial period will kick off with the Bad Behavior concert, part of Anoka’s Rockin’ on the Rum summer concert series.
The measure was initially passed in the State Legislature, allowing Anoka the special privilege of piloting a Social District. If successful, Anoka will be able to host numerous events open to the public in the district that are both family and adult friendly. The Halloween Capitol of the World seems like the perfect place to pilot the Social District, and hopefully a successful pilot will give other cities the opportunity to follow suit and drive more tourism revenue into our Minnesota towns.
The Social District is a specially designated, and clearly marked area in downtown Anoka where alcohol can be purchased and consumed throughout the district. Businesses within the district will have window decals stating one of the following: “Social District Beverages Sold Here”; “Social District Beverages Welcome”; or, “No Social District Beverages Allowed”. Participating businesses will sell beverages in specially marked cups you can take throughout the social district.
Outside alcohol is not allowed in the district, only what is served by licensed providers, so leave your flask at home! You can still be charged with alcohol related offenses such as Drunk in Public within the Social District, so please drink responsibly, and enjoy a fun new privilege!
