The Minnesota Second Chance Coalition held its annual rally at the state capitol in St. Paul, Minnesota, on February 19, 2020. The Minnesota Second Chance Coalition is calling for changes in Minnesota’s criminal justice system and is optimistic that some of the proposals they are promoting will become laws this year.
One of those proposals is to stop suspending drivers’ licenses for unpaid traffic tickets. Over 81,000 driver’s licenses are suspended in Minnesota solely because of unpaid traffic tickets. Suspension of drivers’ licenses can lead to a financial crisis for families without savings.
Another proposal with bipartisan Senate support would give judges more discretion to order alternatives to incarcerations for primary caregivers for children. Many mothers are in prison for technical violations or nonviolent crimes that result in them being separated from their children.
Other proposals, such as automatically restoring the voting rights of felons on probation may face longer odds.
