From August 1, 2025, to July 21, 2029, Mendota Heights and Minneapolis will implement speed cameras to administer speeding tickets. The new program intends to reduce unsafe behavior, and any revenue generated from this program must be spent on traffic safety improvements.
Any speedster caught traveling 10MPH or more over the posted speed limit will be given a one-time warning in the mail. Any additional 10MPH over the speed limit violations will result in a $40 fine, and any 20MPH over the speed limit violations will result in an $80 fine. Drivers may take a free safety class instead of paying a fine for their first ticket. Violations do not go on driving records and cannot be grounds for revocation of a driver’s license, arrest, or towing of a vehicle.
How is this legal? Minnesota Statute §169.147 provides the basis for this pilot program. The Statute explains that the program is limited in terms of years and limited to the cities of Mendota Heights and Minneapolis. At the location of each camera, informative signs will be placed to let motorists know their speed is being recorded and captured.
