With winter temperatures and snow accumulating across the state of Minnesota, snowmobile and ice fishing season is underway. Getting a DWI can affect both your driver’s license and your ability to lawfully operate a recreational vehicle, such as a snowmobile, but also an ATV or boat.
While driving under the influence of alcohol (DWI) has been a crime for quite some time, the consequences for DWI’s and DWI-related offenses in Minnesota have changed with “Little Alan’s Law.” The big change with “Little Alan’s Law” is that automobile drivers who get a DWI could also lose their recreational driving privileges for a snowmobile, ATV, or boat. The previous law only revoked driving privileges for recreational vehicles if they were driving while impaired on a recreational vehicle. The new law brings the rules and penalties in line for all DWI’s, no matter which type of vehicle was used to commit the DWI. Remember, you can always still get a DWI if operating a snowmobile, ATV, or boat while impaired.
